This article analyzes the formation and maintenance of the rock band wave in Taiwan since the late 1990s, which is characterized by the increasing number of teenagers involved in bands and by a normalized positive image. The identity of the underground rock music community started to crystalize in the early 1990s in the Daan District of Taipei. However, since the late 1990s, rock music has gradually been regarded as a legitimate cultural activity by the mainstream society in Taiwan, thanks to the institutionalization of the rock community. This transition does not result only from rock’s commercial success, the growing presence of famous musicians in the media, or their engagements in social movements. It also benefits from the musical community network that is woven by the hit music clubs of high school students and the Keywords: Hakka, male queer, urban-rural, diaspora, intersectionality, shame, camp supporting music instrument stores in the neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the low cost of musical equipment in Taiwan makes rock more accessible. The band wave seems to have risen at the convergence of all these factors. But more importantly, what makes it a success story lies in the fact that the moral values promoted by its practitioners do correspond to the ones of the mainstream society.

In an attempt to redefine “small towns,” which refer to towns and cities at or below the level of the third-tier as generic spaces produced by China’s urban development from the 1980s onwards and normally evoke the bad taste and worthlessness often attributed to counties, this paper seeks to examine the cultural politics and representations of classed selves in contemporary China. An outline of the urbanization of China’s small towns, intra-city competition, and the effects of this hierarchized space on subject formation will be followed by a close reading of the urban writings of a small-town-boy-turned- Shanghainese writer Guo Jingming. Both Guo’s early writings on Shanghai fever and his novels of the city’s second-generation nouveau riche will be discussed in an effort to reach a critical understanding of the methods by which an entitled middle-class self-image—marked by the accumulation of cultural capital, conspicuous consumption and the aestheticization of one’s lifestyle—is formed in a first-tier global city as well as why the success stories of this Shanghai new comer are always haunted by the specter of his abandoned small-town identity.

Keywords: small-town youth, the politics of taste, urban writings, new Shanghainese, Guo Jingming

There are generally two tendencies characterizing traditional studies of regional history: First, it usually regards the morphology and features of a locality as the products of endogenously social and cultural development, overlooking the possible effects of the flows of people and trade between various places. Second, it views geographical space as a dependent variable to be determined by other factors, underestimating the potentially constructive role of space itself in the development of history. Informed by a rethinking of the epistemology of space in the field of geography in recent years, this study intends to reinterpret Taipei’s regional development in the Qing Dynasty from a perspective that treats the relations between society, space, and time in a more balanced and dialectical fashion. This study holds that Taipei’s regional development in the Qing Dynasty should be looked at simultaneously in terms of three geographical scales, namely, the system of world capitalism, the Qing Empire, and the Taipei Basin itself. From this perspective, this study points out that the spatial structure of the Taipei region was not merely an outcome of local natural or cultural condition, but a social-spatial configuration set by those in power to deal with the political-economic crisis taking place on a greater geographical scale. When a particular social-spatial configuration was not adequate in dealing with a new crisis, it would be reorganized accordingly. Throughout Qing Dynasty, there were four distinct city-town networks that had emerged in the Taipei Basin, i.e. the Frontier of Qing Empire, the Xingzhunag Town-Cluster, the Mongjia Town-Cluster, and the Dadaocheng Town-Cluster, which corresponded respectively to the crisis of coast defense in Southeast China, the crisis of shortage of food provisions in Fujian, the crisis of Taiwan’s internal class conflicts, and the crisis of the overproduction of the world capitalism.
