In recent years, industrial agglomeration is increasingly becoming a major issue in the academic fields of economics, geography, urban planning and public policy in Taiwan. Most studies, however, merely focus on the effects of agglomeration taking place in institutional industrial districts, overlooking the industrial clusters composed by undocumented factories spreading all over Taiwan. On the other hand, those few studies concerned with undocumented factories tend to treat these issues from the perspective of administrative management, neglecting the possible effects of agglomeration these undocumented factories might produce and their relations to documented factories. In response to such theoretical gaps, the present study looks at the undocumented factories in Wenzaizun, New Taipei, exploring the relations among industrial agglomeration, creative milieu and informal landscape. This study asks a fundamental question: As a component of urban social and spatial assemblage, how is Wenzaizun related to Xinzhuang’s urban development? By analyzing the development of manufactural industry clusters in Xinzhuang, the production network of factories in Wenzaizun, the supply-demand mechanism of factory buildings, and the ways local government manages undocumented factories, this study suggests that Wenzaizun is best understood as a “temporary habitat” where business owners and land owners appropriate a time-space interstices during Xinzhuang’s urbanization process. #is habitat is inseparable from the development of metal manufactural industry in Xinzhuang, and it is an indispensable “assemblage” in the industrialization process of Xinzhuang.

Keywords: economic agglomeration, urban informality, assemblage urbanism, production of space, undocumented factory, Xinzhuang

In Taiwan, at the turn of the new century, half a century has passed since the dramatic year of 1949, marking an end to the youth of the post-war generation who found themselves in their bittersweet middle age. The Taiwanese localization movement since the 1980s has now become a prominent and irresistible trend. Bidding farewell to their youth, anticipating the brink of old age, while trapped in the crevasses of history and a generation gap, how did those middle-aged second-generation Mainlander writers contend with the unavoidable rupture in their lives and redefine themselves through their writing?

By connecting a series of micro autobiographical narratives written by individual writers, this article aims at exploring how individual writers, by reflecting on their personal experiences, respond through autobiographies to the challenges raised by their new homeland. It also investigates the connection (or disconnection) between personal and collective history.

This article takes on a relatively special form of academic writing. As a narrative historical research article, it is expected to return to the narrative tradition of classical historiography without compromising its academic value. This is also a research where the author himself is both an observer as well as a participant. While lurking behind the entire grand narrative, the author’s role only becomes overt at the end of the article to mark an abrupt ending to the project.

Keywords: second-generation Mainlanders, autobiographical writing, memory, identity, home

The Chinese Student Weekly, once published more than 30,000 copies per issue, was one of the most important youth publications in Hong Kong from the 1950s to the 1970s. It had also cultivated a large group of high-quality authors and readers, and promoted the academic and cultural development of Hong Kong and the entire Greater China region. Sponsored by US official funds, the magazine continuously praised and promoted traditional Chinese history, culture, and language knowledge to young people in Hong Kong during the publication of more than two decades (1952-1974), thereby establishing a contemporary sense of “Chinese” identity among Hong Kong youths. In addition, it also used traditional Chinese cultural knowledge as an ideological tool to counter the Chinese Communist ideology, driving young people in Hong Kong to resist the CCP regime that undermined traditional Chinese culture in mainland China. This article will first introduce the political background of The Chinese Student Weekly and contemporary Hong Kong, and then analyze retrospectively the articles from The Chinese Student Weekly which introduced Chinese history, language, music, art and other traditional cultures. At the same time, this article applies various theories in nationalism and identity to analyze how The Chinese Student Weekly promoted traditional Chinese cultural knowledge to build the “Chinese” identity of contemporary Hong Kong youths.

Keywords: The Chinese Student Weekly, youth publication, traditional Chinese cultural knowledge in Hong Kong, Chinese identity, cultural politics
